In the heart of the captivating rolling fields, lived a boy named Shepherd. His being was essentially pure, simple, and honest. His main role was to tend to his flock of sheep.
Their low murmuring and the rustling of the wind among the solo tree on the mountaintop were his main co-dwellers. Day in day, looking out for his wards inculcated in here him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for companionship. In one such instance out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a naughty plan.
Stories of wolves hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One afternoon he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but found nothing threatening.
The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This trick laughed for a few more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once lost, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
